cuil에 관한 기사를 보고 그냥 쓰윽 넘어가고 말았는데, sonagi님께서 관련글에 언급하셔서 이제서야 cuil을 살펴보게 된다. ho.ho.ho.

 

밑도 끝도 없이 시커먼 녀석. 넌 누구냐?  

Rather than rely on superficial popularity metrics, Cuil searches for and ranks pages based on their content and relevance. When we find a page with your keywords, we stay on that page and analyze the rest of its content, its concepts, their inter-relationships and the page’s coherency.

웹페이지에 기반해서 그것의 컨텐츠, 컨셉, 그리고 inter-relationship과 해당 페이지의 긴밀성까지 분석한다니 왠지 무서워 보인다.

Feature들을 살펴보면,

  1. Drilldown
  2. Roll-over definitions
  3. Tabs
  4. Navigation suggestion

라고 한다.

Drilldown feature는 검색결과에 대한 refinement와 그에 대한 부가 정보를 제공해준다. 추상적인 것에서 출발하여 구체적으로 원하는 것을 순차적으로 찾아가고자 하는 사용자의 니즈를 충족시켜줄 수 있을 것 같다. but, 새로운 것은 아니다.

Roll-over definitions은 Drilldown에서 나온 term들에 대해 각각 그 정보를 제공해준다.

Tabs은 검색결과를 좀 더 세밀화시켜주는 기능이다. related-searches에 다름 아니다.

Navigation suggestion은 검색어 제안.

cuil에서 보여주는 features들은 전혀 새로운 것이 없다.

 

그럼 검색결과를 한번 살펴볼까.

 

‘bennigans’에 대한 검색결과이다.

cuil : 131,387건

google : 941,000건

google의 경우 related searches로 : bennigans bankrupty, bennigans closes 를 제공한다. 게다가 좀 더 current results를 제공한다.

 

두번째 검색어 : semantic web.

cuil : 2,023,163건. Drilldown feature가 의미있게 보인다. 추상적인 것 -> 구체적인 것에 대한 가이드를 제공해준다.

google : 7,840,000건.

 

한번만 더 해보자. 세번째 검색어 : Do DOE and EPA have conflicts?  hakia 에서 google과 검색결과를 비교해보라는 예제이다.

cuil은 다음과 같이 대답해준다.

No results were found for: Do DOE and EPA have conflicts?

세가지의 검색어만을 가지고 cuil을 판단할 수는 없겠지만, 

  1. Size Matters
  2. Popularity is useful, but not always important
  3. Organization is fundamental
  4. Cuil analyzes the web, not its users

라는 cuil의 철학과 그 결과를 보고 이야기 하자면,
‘사용자를 고려하지 않는 웹이 과연 의미가 있을까’라는 생각이 든다.
사용자에 기반하지 않은 ,단지 웹페이지의 분석만으로의 접근법은 그 방향이 잘못되지 않았을까? 
On the Page -> Off the Page의 흐름에서 다시 On the Page를 진보시키려는 노력일까?

아무튼, 현재까지는 실망스럽지만 Cuil이 어떤 방향으로 어떻게 나아가는지는 지켜보아야 하겠다.
